Graymarine Fireball 6 cyl. in line, flathead, 140 hp

Postby Udo Horstmann » Tue Apr 17, 2012 12:01 am

Hello Don, Hello Eric
my name is Udo Horstmann from Bavaria (Germany). I think we met sometimes at lake Como, last year to the Riva Days and also this year.
Im am searching a Graymarine Fireball 140 hp, 6 cylinder in line flathead with all the additional parts such as converter, carburators, starter etc..... a complete and running engine....also completely rebuilt.
I saw the engine on youtube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHFrK0kPuMM )
May be you can help me to find one for my Ariston BM #1 (1950) where it was original.
See you soon at the biggest event of this year in Sarnico!
Thanks
Udo

Udo;

Good to hear from you and yes Como 2010 was a great time. See funny picture of you guys waiting for things to get moving.

I can help you find an engine no problem. Gray marine had a special serial number series to determine what year the engine was made.

Have you got the original serial number of the engine from Piero at RHS? This will tell us the exact year and specs for your original.

Thanks so much for posting on Riva Forum.

Also, I would love to see you post some pictures of your Ariston with the yellow and black and white interior.

Hi Don,
Thank you very much for your answer. At the moment I have some trouble with the Computers, so the last mail to you was originally the first mail......
I talked with Piero Gibellini and he phoned the RIVA Yard to look for the engine number. But the egine numbers for the RIVAS are listed only since 1955. So we have no number for the engine!
Only the information: Graymarine Fireball 140 hp 6 cyl. in line
I hope that we will find one...

Thank you for asking for pictures of my Ariston #155 from 1957. I will search some good pictures in my archive and post them after converting in smaller files.
I have also a Florida #345 vom 1959 also with the black/ white checkered upholstery and yellow borders. If you want I can also post some pictures of this boat.

Udo

Udo,

It was great to meet you and your family... Your boys seem to be very interested in the boats, which is a great thing for family and learning!

You may want to try some communication with Morin Boats (http://www.morinboats.com) in Michigan USA or with VanNess engines.

They may be able to help you locate what you need.

As I've said in other posts, the details are what makes it a pleasure to run. Those details include having the sub-systems like carburetors, distributors, generators etc all done by specialists in addition to a specialist with the engines... these are important questions to ask the machine shop that is doing the work. Also, there are many possible upgrades that are not visible once the engine is complete and assembled that can make the boat much more pleasurable to use.

Have a look and send them an email. ;)
This one is a down-draft three carburetor setup, The 140's to the best of my knowledge are updraft twin carb versions.

If you need any help... I'm happy to assist as will Don I'm sure.

The Gray marine 244 cubic inch series of engines were made for many years both pre and post WWII. They are a difficult engine to re manufacture and require line boring of the Cam and crank. I had a 1940 Fireball six-150 built several years ago for one of my boats. See pics. This engine is different than the post war but still 244 cubic inch.

I will try and post some more information about the post war 244 used in the Riva Boats.
